Pricing and plans: Free, Pro, Max, Team and the API

Every way to pay for Claude in one place, with a break-even test that tells you whether a subscription or the API is the overpayment for your usage.

In this lesson you will

  • List every Claude plan and what each unlocks
  • Run the break-even test between Pro, Max and the API
  • Spot the three usage patterns where people overpay for Claude

Claude has five app plans and one metered API. All of them run the same models; they differ in usage allowance, features and who they are aimed at. Here they are as recorded in the OverpayingForAI catalogue at the time of writing. Verify the live numbers on the Claude pricing page before you buy.

Figure 1.Claude's plans as recorded in the catalogue. Pro is the plan most individuals should compare against; Max only pays off when you hit Pro's limits every day.

What each plan is really for

  • Free is a working product, not a demo. If you use Claude a few times a day for short tasks, you may never need to pay.
  • Pro is for people who hit the free limit most days or who want Claude Code, extended thinking and the full model menu without friction.
  • Max is for people who hit *Pro's* limit most days — typically Claude Code users running long sessions. It is a usage allowance, not a smarter Claude.
  • Team and Enterprise are about administration: shared billing, workspace management, security and compliance. Per-seat prices change; use the official page.
  • The API is for automation and building. It is also the cheapest option for people who use Claude in bursts — a heavy week, then nothing.
Subscription vs API: two ways to pay for the same modelFlat monthly fee with usage limits, or metered per-token billing with no ceiling.Subscription (chat app)API (pay per token)Fixed price every monthBill tracks real usageUsage caps and rate limitsNo cap — budget alerts are on youBest for daily heavy chatBest for bursts, automation, appsIncludes the app, files, memoryYou bring your own interfaceIdle months are wasted moneyIdle months cost $0Break-even test: if your API bill for the same work would be under the subscription price, the subscription is the overpayment.
Figure 2.The same model, two meters. A subscription is a fixed cost with a usage cap; the API is a variable cost with none.

The break-even test

Estimate what your month would cost on the API, then compare it with the subscription. A typical chat turn on Sonnet 5 — a 500-word question against a 2,000-word history, with a 400-word answer — costs about a cent. Twenty of those a day for a month is roughly $6. That is well under Pro's $20, so a light user is overpaying on Pro *if* they are comfortable with an API-based client.

Now flip it. A Claude Code session can move millions of tokens an hour. Two hours a day on Opus 5 through the API can run to hundreds of dollars a month; Max at $100 or $200 caps that. Heavy agentic users are underpaying on Max, which is precisely why the plan exists.

Knowledge check

You use Claude heavily for one week a month and barely touch it otherwise. Which meter is cheapest?

Lesson FAQ

Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?

Yes. Pro and Max include Claude Code usage within their allowances. Max exists mainly because Claude Code sessions consume that allowance quickly.

Is there an annual discount on Claude Pro?

Anthropic has offered annual billing at a lower effective monthly rate. Because that changes, the course does not print the number; check the official plan page and the site's Claude pricing page.

Can I use the API without a subscription?

Yes. The API is billed separately from app plans. You add credit or a payment method in the Anthropic Console and pay per token; no Pro or Max plan is required.
