Every way you can pay for Gemini, what each one actually buys, and a simple test for whether a subscription or the API is cheaper for you.

Google sells Gemini four ways: a free app, two consumer subscriptions, and pay-per-token API access. They are priced for different people and the wrong choice is easy to make. This lesson lays them side by side using the numbers in our catalogue.

The free tier

The Gemini app is free with a Google account. Our catalogue describes it as "free access with rate limits — best for light, occasional use only". You get a capable Flash-class model, file uploads and search grounding. What you do not get is a guarantee of the flagship model, high limits, or Gemini inside your Google apps. Google AI Pro

At $19.99 a month in our catalogue, Google AI Pro is the successor to Gemini Advanced and Google One AI Premium. It bundles the strongest Gemini models, higher limits, Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets, NotebookLM, and a cloud-storage allowance. If you already pay Google for storage, the AI part is effectively cheaper than the sticker price. Compare it with rivals at ChatGPT vs Gemini.

Google AI Ultra

Google AI Ultra is listed at $249 a month in our catalogue, with a note that the price needs manual verification. It targets people who hit the Pro limits daily: heavy video and image generation, long research runs, and early access to new models. For most readers of this course it is the wrong plan. A $249 subscription buys a very large amount of API usage on Flash — do that maths before you pay.

The Gemini API

The API bills per token, with no monthly fee. Google AI Studio offers a free tier for testing with lower limits, then paid usage at the per-model rates on the ladder in lesson 2. There is no minimum spend. This is the only route where price scales with what you actually use, which makes it the cheapest option for automation and the most expensive option for someone who chats casually and never looks at the bill.

A five-minute break-even check

Estimate your monthly words in and out of Gemini. A long chat exchange is about 1,000 words each way; multiply by exchanges per day and days per month.
Convert to tokens (roughly 1,000 words = 1,300 tokens) and multiply by a Flash price from the ladder. For most people this lands well under $5 a month.
If that number is below $19.99 and you do not need Workspace integration, the API or the free app wins. If you value Docs and Gmail integration, Pro's price is the cost of convenience, not of the model.

No. Consumer subscriptions cover the Gemini app and Workspace features. API usage is billed separately through Google AI Studio or Vertex AI.

What happened to Gemini Advanced?

Gemini Advanced was the paid tier inside the Google One AI Premium plan. Google restructured plans in 2026 and the Pro-level offering is now sold as Google AI Pro. Our catalogue keeps the legacy row for people still on the old billing.
