Pricing and plans

Grok is paid for in three ways: a free allowance inside X, paid X Premium and SuperGrok plans, and the pay-per-token xAI API. Here is what each one is worth.

In this lesson you will

  • Name the three ways to pay for Grok and who each one suits
  • Explain the difference between a subscription and API billing
  • Decide which route is cheapest for your own usage pattern

Grok's pricing is unusual because the consumer product is bundled into an existing social network. That makes it cheap for light users who already pay for X, and confusing for everyone else. This lesson separates the three routes so you can pick one on purpose.

Three ways to pay for GrokGrok in X (free allowance)
Free
with an X account
Limited number of messages per window
Access to the default consumer model
Fine for occasional questions and thread summaries
X Premium / SuperGrok
Paid
see official page
Higher usage limits than the free allowance
Access to the stronger Grok models in the app
SuperGrok is the standalone plan if you do not want X Premium
xAI API (pay per token)
Per token
from $0.20 per 1M input
Pick any Grok model per request
Cached-input discounts on the official page
Bill scales with usage; no idle monthly fee
Figure 1.We do not list subscription prices for X Premium or SuperGrok because they are not in our catalogue and change by region. Check the official page at x.ai for current figures. API prices come from models.json.

Route 1: the free allowance inside X

Anyone with an X account can open Grok and ask a limited number of questions per time window. The allowance is enough for casual use: summarise a thread, check a fact, draft a reply. It is not enough for daily deep work, and the model you get may be a lighter one.

If you find yourself waiting for the limit to reset more than once or twice a week, you are a candidate for a paid plan. If you never hit it, stay free. There is no prize for paying.

Route 2: X Premium tiers and SuperGrok

Paying for X Premium unlocks higher Grok limits and stronger models inside the X app. SuperGrok is the standalone Grok subscription for people who want the assistant without the social-network bundle. Both are flat monthly fees; the exact amounts and what each tier includes are on the official xAI page, so see current pricing there before deciding.

A flat plan is worth it when you use Grok most days and you value not thinking about tokens. It is a poor deal if you use it in bursts, because you pay for the quiet weeks too. Our subscription vs API guide walks through the break-even logic in detail.

Route 3: the xAI API

Subscription vs API: two ways to pay for the same modelFlat monthly fee with usage limits, or metered per-token billing with no ceiling.Subscription (chat app)API (pay per token)Fixed price every monthBill tracks real usageUsage caps and rate limitsNo cap — budget alerts are on youBest for daily heavy chatBest for bursts, automation, appsIncludes the app, files, memoryYou bring your own interfaceIdle months are wasted moneyIdle months cost $0Break-even test: if your API bill for the same work would be under the subscription price, the subscription is the overpayment.
Figure 2.A subscription is a flat fee whether you use it or not. The API bills exactly what you consume, so light or bursty usage is cheaper per token, while heavy daily chat can be cheaper on a plan.

The API is billed per token, per model. At the time of writing, Grok 4 Fast lists at $0.20 per 1M input and $0.50 per 1M output; the mid-tier Grok 4.3 and Grok 4.20 list at $1.25 and $2.50. A typical chat message of a few hundred tokens costs a fraction of a cent on any of them.

xAI also publishes a cheaper rate for cached input tokens, which applies when you resend the same long prefix, and a batch rate on some models for jobs that can wait. We do not quote the cached figure here; see the official pricing page. Lesson 7 shows how to take advantage of both.

Lesson FAQ

How much does SuperGrok cost?

We do not list a figure because it is not in our catalogue and varies by region and tier. Check the official page at https://x.ai for current pricing.

Does X Premium include the API?

No. X Premium and SuperGrok cover the consumer app. The xAI API is billed separately per token through the developer console.

Is there a free tier on the xAI API?

Our catalogue does not flag a free tier on any Grok API model. xAI sometimes offers credits for new accounts; check the console when you sign up.
