Getting started with Mistral: your first 15 minutes

Create an account, tour Le Chat, set the few settings that matter, and finish one real task, all on the free tier.

In this lesson you will

  • Set up Le Chat and the API console without spending anything
  • Find the model picker, file upload and web search controls
  • Complete a first task that tells you whether Mistral fits your work

You can be productive with Mistral in a quarter of an hour without paying anything. The sequence below uses Le Chat for the chat interface and the console only to look, not to spend. Do it in order; the last step is the one that actually answers whether Mistral is worth your time.

First 15 minutes

  1. 1

    Create a free account

Go to chat.mistral.ai and sign up with email or a Google, Microsoft or Apple login. No card is needed for the free tier. Skip any upgrade prompt for now.

  2. 2

    Tour the interface

The left rail holds your chat history. The composer at the bottom has a paperclip for file upload, a toggle for web search, and a model or mode selector. Hover each control once so you know where the money is: web search and file upload count against free limits faster than plain chat.

  3. 3

Set the two settings that matter

Open settings from your avatar. First, check the data and privacy options and decide whether your chats may be used to improve models; turn it off if you will paste work material. Second, set your preferred language and any custom instructions so you stop repeating yourself in every prompt.

  4. 4

    Peek at the API console

Open console.mistral.ai with the same login. Look at the Models and Billing pages so the API is not a mystery later. You do not need an API key yet, and you do not need to add a payment method.

  5. 5

    Do one real task

Pick a task from your actual week: rewrite an email you sent, summarise a PDF you already read, or debug a function you already fixed. You know the right answer, so you can judge Mistral's output honestly instead of being impressed by fluency.

Figure 1.The only step that costs anything is the one you skip: judging the output against a task where you already know what good looks like.

What to look for in the first result

  • Did it follow the instruction exactly, or did it add a preamble and a summary you did not ask for? Extra words cost output tokens on the API and attention in the app.
  • Did it invent a fact, a citation, or a function name? Mistral models, like all models, will do this. Note how often.
  • Was the tone right for your audience without a second prompt? If you always have to fix tone, put it in custom instructions.
  • Did the free tier limit interrupt you? Note when, because that is the only reason to pay for Le Chat.

After your first task, do two more on different kinds of work: one writing, one analytical. Three judged results is enough to decide whether to stay on free, try a paid tier, or move to the API. Lesson 6 gives you five workflows to try; Lesson 3 already gave you the price of each door.

Why should your first task be something you have already done yourself?

Lesson FAQ

Do I need a credit card to use Le Chat?

No. The free tier of Le Chat needs only an email or social login. A payment method is required for the pay-as-you-go API and for paid Le Chat tiers.

Can I stop Mistral training on my chats?

Le Chat has a data and privacy setting that controls whether conversations may be used to improve models. Check it on day one and turn it off if you paste work material.
