Nobody overpays for AI by choosing the $20 plan. They overpay by choosing it for the wrong reason, or by staying on free while burning an hour a week fighting caps. Both are the same mistake: not counting time. So count it.
Pick an hourly figure for your time. Not your salary divided by hours; the number you would pay to get an hour back. Most people land between $20 and $50. The chart uses $25 an hour and converts weekly friction into a monthly cost so it sits next to the $20 plan.
Figure 1.Friction means time spent waiting for a cooldown, re-pasting after a cap, splitting documents by hand, or redoing an answer from a downgraded model. At $25/hour the crossover is about 11 minutes a week (4.33 weeks per month).

Well over it — you are already paying; you are just paying in minutes. Switch to dollars, which are cheaper.

It is worth $20 if free-tier friction costs you more than about ten to fifteen minutes a week at a normal value of your time, or if you need a paid-only feature such as higher file limits or the strongest model on every message. For light, occasional use it is not, and ChatGPT Go at $8 sits in between for moderate users.
▸What hourly rate should I use?
The amount you would honestly pay to get one hour back, not your salary. Most people choose $20 to $50. If you pick $10 and the answer is still 'pay', the decision is easy; if you pick $50 and it is still 'stay free', equally easy.
▸Should I pay for all three?
Almost never. Pick one paid plan for the job that causes the friction and keep the other two on their free tiers as backups; they cover the gaps in each other's caps surprisingly well.
