Confidence versus accuracy: the signals that actually matter
Tone tells you nothing. Learn the four things that do — a named source, a stated limit, a date, and a specific you can check — and practise telling a confident answer from a reliable one.

People read confidence as competence. It works well enough with humans, who usually hedge when they are unsure. It does not work with a model, which produces the same even, assured prose whether it is reciting a settled fact or inventing a novel. You need different signals — ones the model cannot produce by accident.
What to look for instead of tone. An answer with none of the right-hand column is a draft, however good it sounds.

▸Why does AI sound so confident when it is wrong?
Because confidence is the style of the text it learned from, not a report of how sure it is. The model does not have a separate sense of certainty that leaks into its tone. Look for a named source, a stated limit and a date instead.
▸Is a hedged answer a sign the AI is bad?
Usually the opposite. An answer that says "I'm not certain about the current limits — check the vendor page" is telling you exactly where to look. That is more useful than a confident answer that hides the same uncertainty.
▸Do citations from AI mean the answer is right?
No. A citation means you can check — it does not mean the model read the source correctly, or that the source exists. Open the link. If the page says what the model said, trust it; if not, you have found the error.
